2010 Chevrolet Camaro: American Muscle on the Nürburgring

It was only a matter of time before the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro hit the Nürburgring test track. GM has been using the German road course to fine-tune nearly all of its performance cars as of late, so the appearance of the Camaro alongside the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 didn't surprise our spy shooters.

Unlike some of the earlier Camaro prototypes we've seen, this particular test mule has a set of Brembo brakes and a more aggressive wheel-and-tire package. The obvious conclusion? This is a Camaro Super Sport model. But not so fast, because when you consider that previous Camaro test mules have featured very tame-look brakes, this upgrade could indicate nothing more than the Chevrolet Camaro Z28.

Then consider the sound of this Camaro test mule. It's all motor, yet it doesn't have the same sonic signature as GM's supercharged LSA V8 that speculation indicates will be the centerpiece of the top-of-the-line Camaro SS. With 525 horsepower, the supercharged engine would give the SS a big advantage over both the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the Ford Shelby GT500. But this prototype sounds like it probably has a normally aspirated V8, most likely a detuned LS3 V8 with somewhere around 400 hp.

Judging from the looks of this Camaro at speed, the suspension is already well dialed in. Roll, dive and squat are all pretty minimal for a car that's expected to have a curb weight in the range of 3,600-3,800 pounds. With the start of production for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro still a year away, the engineers at Chevrolet still have plenty of time to fine-tune this car, so these Nürburgring tests are just the beginning.

Why do you hate GM so much. Like it or not, GM has contributed to the auto industry more than you know. Many contributions to the industry have been made because of US automakers. If your wish is to see US auto industries fail, then that is wrong. Maybe you should stop and think and use your own judgement and not listen to the propaganda you read about foreign cars.

P.S. I drive both American and Foreign because I am not a brainwashed moron.

I LOVE G.M. !!!
That company helped to build a massive manufacturing sector in N.A. !
I don't live in a shell. However I get pissed off when i see guys on G.M.'s board like Bob Lutz saying that the Prius was a "publicity stunt" and that "Toyota would never make a buisness of them". They insisted on pushing the company in the wrong dirrections!!! My home town of Oshawa Ontario is on the verge of financial collapse because of these ignorant pigs! STOP PROTECTING THEM.

I work for a Japanese company developing the most efficient Kinetic Energy Recovery System to date. G.M. and their suppliers still show NO interest in pushing the realm of what these systems can do.
We're working now on not only reclaming energy under coasting and braking, but also reclaiming energy from heat and sound produced in traditional engines. G.M. of the 50's would have been on board with us, for some reason though todays version of G.M. shows no interest in the furure.
f1nuts (November 20, 2008 at 5:35 pm)
Wow you should run G.M.! Say, how will the Volt get 100 miles per gallon when G.M. is out of business? The final exterior design isn't complete on the car, they don't have a supplier for the battery which hasn't been designed yet, and the plant G.M. says will produce the 1.4L engine hasn't been built yet!! They deserve to fail because they pushed the Camaro into production ahead of the VOLT!!
Every bad move they make is applauded by people like you. You share the fault in their failure
HakemEX (November 20, 2008 at 5:45 pm)
The Volt will get a 100 mpg EQUIVALENT. with the electric motor combined with the gas motor. The Final exterior design IS complete. the engine IS made. it's the Cruze's engine without the electric components. The Camaro was easier to make thean the Volt. for the Volt, they had to create a car with technology that hadn't been invented yet. THEY had to create it. The Camaro is a new body on top of the G8's powertrain.
HakemEX (November 20, 2008 at 5:46 pm)
There isn't a whole bunch of rocket science you have to do when it comes to making the 2010 Camaro, but when you're making a game changer such as the Volt, you need to be careful in every move you make. Perfection takes time. Every logical move they make is shot down by dumbasses like you. And I don't even like GM all that much.
f1nuts (November 20, 2008 at 6:37 pm)
Dumbass? I'm the biggest supporter of Hybrids.
Bob Lutz the official "car guy" on the board at G.M. 10 years ago went so far as to say that Toyota's Prius was just a publicity stunt!! Now they have him trying to explain why the Volt is still 3yrs minimum away. By that time the latest Prius will be on sale... approaching 2 million sold! And NO the plant that will build the Volt engine isn't built yet!! And no the battery doesn't exist for the Volt, thus no specs from G.M.
